  • General Conference: Opening Plenary

    General Conference: Opening Plenary

The opening plenary session was mostly procedural (read: not that exciting).

But there are few things to note.

    1)The addition of rule 15(5):
Delegates are free to vote according to their conscience without interference by others observing, monitoring, or recording their votes. Persons shall not give or accept bribes or threaten delegates in order to influence voting.

This addition comes in response to the allegations of voter manipulation at past General Conferences. It is not a call to not allow actual lobbying, debating, and compromise.

    2) Several suggested amendments to the rules from the floor were focused on equity, transparency, acknowledging history and culture, and a move toward unity in diversity.

    3) The resolution that was came form the floor that calls the Commission on the General Conference to give a detailed transparent explanation was one that seeks to address the accusations that the Commission on General Conference did not follow through with their role to support all delegates around the world.

    4) Can we get everyone the right print outs and right food? I mean, come on, the multiple requests for the correct cultural and dietary foods (or give per diem/reimbursements) and documents in the the correct language. It seems like they are working this out.

What this is pointing us toward is a church that acknowledges our flaws, works toward transparencies, and embraces differences. We are learning from our mistakes, and building a new future.

  • General Conference: Opening Worship

    General Conference: Opening Worship

This was a whirlwind first day of General Conference. I was immediately greeted by a ton of folks from around the denomination.

As opening worship began, we started with not John or Charles Wesley, but a song with the tune for Charles Wesley’s grandson, Samuel Sebastian Wesley. The hymn, “The Church’s One Foundation,” was originally written by Samuel John Stone (who had an excellent beard). It was written in response to schism of the Church of South Africa. So, to open with this hymn that a Wesleyan pedigree and a call to return to Christ as our focus in the midst of the continually present schism.

The other music, both traditional and modern offered a call to revival. They were call for us to proclaim the saving grace of Christ and the empowering nature of the Holy Spirit. And, they also place a charge on us as individuals and churches to reclaim the call to spread the Gospel and into Christ’s Love.

And then, Bishop Bickerton lead us into a call to renewal and revival, and called for the church to do the work of ministry that is needed in this world. He called on people who were there solely to sow discord, to cause further division, to create disruptions to leave with integrity.

What I take from this service is that we need to recenter on the message and mission of Christ. We are going to be diverse in opinion, nationality, and ethnicity, and so much more, but if we can root ourselves in the love of Christ and the call to spread the gospel, we can build the Kingdom

  • Dr J’s Song of the Day for General Conference: April 22nd

Dr J’s Song of the Day for General Conference: April 22nd

    General Conference begins tomorrow!
My plan is to give you a song for each day of General Conference to set the mood. Let’s call it Dr J’s song of the day.

To get started, here’s a song from The 502s, a band I recently saw. It’s called, “You belong.”

    A lyric selection:

    So cheers to the future
    Cheers to the past
    Cheers to the pain
    And cheers to the laughs
Toast all the times that it all just goes wrong
See those are the best nights of them all
    So sing hallelujah
Do the best that you can
And you’ll be surprised to see where you land
It turns out ok in the end just so you know.

I have no illusions that this is not going to be messy. If you pay attention to United Methodist History, you will know that it has been messy, painful, and powerful. We’ve stripped the rights and even humanity away from people.

We’ve turned away from the world and toward protecting ourselves. But, we’ve also passed Social Creeds, built missional connections, and seen lives transformed.

We’re wild, but so is everybody else, and I’m glad I get to spend my time with y’all as we build the kingdom.

  • Q&A with Dr J #1

    Q&A with Dr J #1

I’ve been asked several questions about General Conference petitions and other areas. This is the first of many Q&As I will do. Please continue to ask questions and share my responses as you feel led.

    1. Roll Expansion of The Order of the Deacon:
      • There are petitions to allow Deacons the privilege to perform the sacraments without special permission from a bishop. They would not have the same rights as elders related to all sacraments.
      • There are several petitions that would allow Deacons to be elected as Bishops and appointed as District Superintendents. This is an acknowledgement that some Deacons have specialized vocations toward administration and order.
      • Citation: Advanced Daily Christian Advocate (ADCA)
    2. Pension Changes
      • A proposal from Wespath (our pension and health benefit board) would change the pension plan (for people not retired or retiring in the next two years) from a defined-benefit plan to a defined contribution plan for clergy.
      • A defined-benefit plan is our more traditional model, and guarantees all clergy a monthly payment for life.
      • A defined-contribution plan provides an account that is more like a 401(k), and the funds present are limited. It is up to the clergyperson to assume the risk of sustaining the funds.
      • Wespath notes that this is necessary as we have an increasing number of retirees with decreasing membership numbers and financial contributions.
      • Citation: UMNews
    3. Bishops Roles, Retirement, and Assignment
      • Several petitions are proposing term limits and limitations for bishops.
      • Other petitions proposing limiting the number of bishops in jurisdictions. One would reduce them to five person jurisdiction (unless the jurisdiction requests more and can afford more).
      • One petition even creates partnerships between jurisdictions and central conferences during different quadrenniums. They would share bishops and send central conference bishops to serve in the jurisdiction and vice versa.
      • There was a question about bishops being sent form jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but this is already allowed in the discipline as needed. This requires the transferring bishops to consent to move and the approval of the committee on the episcopacy for each jurisdiction. We may see this more often now with the potential reduction in bishops.
      • Citation: Advanced Daily Christian Advocate (ADCA)
    4. Apportionments as a Tithe
      • Some petitions propose changing church contributions to the general church to a flat 10% of income for the year.
      • This would increase apportionments in some annual conferences and reduce them in others.
      • Annual conferences would be able to decide how much goes to the General church out of this tithe.
      • Citation: Advanced Daily Christian Advocate (ADCA)
    5. Why are we global in scope vs. independent affiliated churches?
      • The question asked why we didn’t use the World Council of Churches as our global governing body.
      • We have a global denomination. It of course comes out our colonial approach to missions. We see them as part of one body each contributing to the body of the church. Our connectionalism hopes to learn, grow, and serve together. it roots itself in our understanding that theology and faith are both incarnational and contextual.
      • We do have churches that have left The UMC and remain affiliated (or not) and we connect with them in different ways including General Conference.
      • The World Methodist Council is also less a governing body and more a collaborative body that works together toward common goals and initiatives.
      • We understand the basic body of the church is the connection (the annual conference specifically) not the individual church, so we we understand that we are interconnected churches tied up in each others faith and salvation, not independent agents.
      • The regionalization proposals will allow for more rich contextuality, but we will still share a common Constitution, Doctrine, and Social Principles.

  • Dakotas Conference Q&A Manipulation

    Dakotas Conference Q&A Manipulation

I was messaged several times yesterday and now today about this event.

The Dakotas Conference had Q&A sessions with delegates and their responses were consolidated and share via a Google Doc. However, there were still editing abilities available to those who viewed it. Someone viewed it, edited it with false information that seems to have malicious intent, and it ended up being circulated in this edited format in UMC and non-UMC circles.

It even ended up on the PlainSpoken YouTube Channel (a conservative Methodist YouTube Channel). He read it out and provided his conservative commentary about the edited document. He seemed to have no knowledge of the edited documents. I do not place blame on this channel and he even posts a response on his substack.

My thoughts, I am fine with WCA, Good News, and other conservative movements being present at General Conference. This is a political process. Let them lobby. They want to have their voices heard, and really, there has been harm done by both sides in this process.

But, maliciously altering information is garbage. If anyone still associated with The UMC is involved in this they should be brought up on charges and dealt with. UMC Pastors, lay people, do your jobs and defend the church. Call out the sin and evil at play here.

And look, I know that there are fine decent Global Methodist, Wesley Covenant Association, and independent conservative people who left amicably. I know you still follow me. Call this out in your communities too.

I am not here to talk about cyber security or the failings of someone to lock a Google Document down. I am here to speak to misinformation, manipulation, and bad actors. If you believe your argument is good, in line with Christ’s church, and the best past, then you don’t need to manipulate or lie. Just share your testimony.

I have no doubt things are going to change in The UMC, but, according to recent Duke study, congregations (at least in NC) hold more diverse views than church previous churches. Conservative folk stayed and trust that we can exist together. And, even though I got it wrong in the last video I posted, the quote “In essentials unit, in non-essentials liberty, and in all things love,” is still a good statement and feels Methodist even if John Wesley never said it. That change is going to look more like the Kingdom than the conservatives or liberals predicted.
